Meine Biografie:

Born and raised in the USA (like Springsteen), I'm a writer and journalist living in Cologne. I speak fluent English and German and have been a lecturer at a number of universities in the US and Germany. My areas of focus are related to the culture and history of the USA, our society and issues such as poverty and race, US domestic policy. Who are Americans, what are their values, what role do politics play in their everyday lives, what do we need to know about working with Americans from a cultural and etiquette perspective (cultural sensitivity)? I studied creative writing, pedagogy and media literacy at university and am qualified to speak on topics such as women's rights, feminism and body image (especially as portrayed in the media), US literature, fake news and media in the US.

From Dick Pics to Death Threats

At the 2019 Media Convention Berlin, I spoke about how online harassment is forcing women journalists offline and the threats they now face for their reporting in real life. From the program description:

For years, women have been reporting being overwhelmed by the threats and harassment that they face online. In 2015, women journalists responding to a US survey said that nearly 2/3 of them had experienced threats, sexist abuse, intimidation, threats and harassment in the course of doing their work. Silencing journalists threatens the free flow of information that is vital in democracies. While women are making inroads in terms of representation in media, some women in media (myself included) are choosing to either self-censor or to maintain a low-profile presence, especially on social media, as little has been done to combat the relentless harassment women face online. After a brief overview of the gendered experiences of harassment online, this session will invite an exchange of ideas as to how women can maintain security without forfeiting their online presence and provide tips for those experiencing or witnessing harassment as to how to best handle it.

Trump – neue politische Spielregeln?
